FLC Women’s Lacrosse starts off their 2015 Spring season this month with goals set high.
This last weekend, FLC women’s lacrosse team played a very close game against Regis University, losing by two points, Ellie Carpenter, midfield captain, said.
The ladies won their previous game against Mesa state last weekend.
“It was an awesome comeback win. We were down 6-3 and we came back to win it,” Julia Decker, head coach of FLC women’s lacrosse said.
FLC’s women’s lacrosse team is a relatively new program. Being only 6 years old it has been a rising competitor since its inception, Marissa DiCecco, attack captain said.
Last year, the RMAC added Lacrosse into its program, and because FLC is in the RMAC, our teams moved into the new conference, Carpenter said.
Previously the team played in a smaller conference called WILA, Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association.
Currently there are five D2 schools in the RMAC that have lacrosse programs, Decker said. Lindenwood and Rockhurst are also two affiliate teams out of Missouri that the FLC team competes against.
The FLC team will play each of the Colorado teams twice and each of the Missouri teams once, she said.
Last year, FLC beat one of the top ten teams nationwide and ended up finishing strong at the end of the season, which lead to being featured in U.S. Lacrosse magazine as an up and coming team to be watched, Carpenter said.
Currently, the team has a few nationally ranked players and is working to preserve its competitive edge, she said.
Playing in the RMAC has added a few teams to the program and allowed for a bigger league with more games in the overall season, Katlyne Duffey, defence captain, said.
The lady's first home game is on Saturday, April 4, against Mesa State out of Grand Junction.
“Our goals are pretty high right now, we want to win the RMAC, I definitely think it's realistic for us,” Decker said.
The team’s two biggest rivals right now are Regis and Lindenwood and both schools are ranked in the top 20 nationally, she said.
Aside from winning the RMAC championship, the team hopes to make the NCAA Women’s D2 tournament this year, she said.
“Its been an awesome experience so far, I think we’ve got an incredible team here, all the girls are like family to each other and they really welcomed me in as well,” Decker said.
