Fort Lewis College's Feminist Voice, an on-campus social justice organization, are performing the “Vagina Monologues” this year at the Durango Arts Center on March 4 and 5.

Tickets will be available for $10 in the Student Union and at the Durango Arts Center until the day of the show, said Dana Mastrangelo, the president of Feminist Voice.

Feminist Voice will be tabling in the union Feb. 24 and 25, as well as from March 2 up to the the start of the show, she said. Students will have plenty of opportunities to get a ticket.

This year presents a wonderful opportunity for a diverse crowd to come down to the Durango Arts Center for an interactive, family-friendly and fun-filled evening, said Riley Burchell, performer and member of Feminist Voice.

Show-goers will be supporting a great cause this year as well, with all the proceeds being donated to Sexual Assault Services Organization, Mastrangelo said.

SASO is a local non-profit organization committed to reducing sexual violence.

The group will be performing 10-12 monologues, along with this year’s newest additions, titled “My Revolution Is in the Body,” and “They Beat the Girl Out of My Boy,” said Mastrangelo.

The performances have a wide range to them, Burchell said. They’ll make you laugh and cry, all the while drawing you into the colorful world of women’s empowerment.

Its not as scary as it sounds, hearing about vaginas, and part of the point is to reduce the heavily sexualized and stigmatized ideas that people might hold about the meaning of the vagina to the modern woman, she said.

The performances provide a truly unique medium to acknowledge some of the most prevalent social and gender issues facing our reality, she said.

This year there has been a push for the monologues to move toward third-wave feminism, providing representation for a larger range of gender identities, Mastrangelo said.

Anyone, from any walk of life can come down and enjoy the riveting, humorous and emotionally gripping performances. The event is not just for women, Burchell said.

It is not a bad date idea for couples looking for a spicy, out-of-the-norm way to spend a Thursday or Friday night, she said.

For more information, or to contribute, Feminist Voice meets at the Gender and Sexuality Resource Center from 5-6 p.m. on Wednesdays. They regularly work on social rights activism projects.
