The hip-hop duo Black Violin played at the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College Wednesday night as a part of their Classical Boom tour.

The duo is from Miami, said Black Violin member Kevin Sylvester, who goes by “Kev Marcus.” Wilner Baptiste, who goes by “Wil B” is the other member of the duo.

They opened with their song “Stereotypes” then Kev Marcus encouraged the audience to come up front and dance.

“The dance floor gets utilized a lot,” said Charles Leslie, director of the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis.

Marcus took a moment before their encore set to introduce the purpose of this tour.

“The show’s about thinking outside the box and breaking stereotypes,” Kev Marcus said.

This was the group’s 106th show this year, Kev Marcus said.

Leslie first heard about Black Violin from a friend whose kids play violin. Leslie has been trying to book them for the last three years, he said.

The Community Concert Hall was finally able to book Black Violin on this tour because Leslie is friends with their agent, he said.

By the end of the show the dance floor was packed with students, adults and children.

The Concert Hall does not host many hip-hop events, but the size of the crowd proved that this concert was a success, Leslie said after stating his concern that the show would only fill half the venue.

The group played a show in Colorado Springs Tuesday night and are driving back up to Denver to play a few shows before moving onto Fort Collins, Leslie said.

Shows at the Community Concert Hall will continue Friday and Saturday night with theatrical performances of “The Lover” and “The Dumb Waiter.”
