This weekend, the Fort Lewis College men’s and women’s soccer teams both went 1-1 in their Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference contests.
FLC’s women were at home for both of their contests this weekend. On Friday, they faced off against the University of Colorado- Colorado Springs Cougars and lost 2-1. On Sunday, they looked to rebound against the Western State Mountaineers and won the game 2-1.
On the other hand, the men’s team had one game away and one game at home this weekend. On Friday, the Skyhawks traveled to Alamosa to play the Adams State Grizzlies and lost 2-1. On Sunday, FLC’s men were back home and blanked UCCS while winning the game 1-0.
The women’s game on Friday was a definite nail bitter. After a 105 minute lightning delay that occurred about the seven minute mark, the match remained scoreless until the 78th minute of the game.
UCCS junior Hanna Parado fired a shot from the right side about 10 yards out and put UCCS up 1-0. That lead lasted about one minute before FLC sophomore Valarie Maestas scored from 10 yards out to tie the game.
UCCS made it 2-1 about two minutes later after scoring on an own goal by FLC which proved to be the difference in the game.
FLC got outshot, had less corner kicks and less shots on goal than UCCS in this contest.
However, FLC’s women turned their misfortune around on Sunday when they beat Western 2-1 behind goals from junior forward Renee Terrel and sophomore forward Meredith Curran.
Terrel scored the first goal of the game with an assist from junior goalkeeper Ali Miller, who punted the ball long to Terrel, who subsequently outran defenders to earn a point for her team in the first half.
In the second half, Curran scored a goal for the Skyhawks after following up and finishing off of a deflection by Western State redshirt sophomore goalkeeper, Emilie Eckhart.
Western State sophomore forward Andrea Grillo put the Mountaineers on the board in the 67th minute, although it was not enough to overcome the Skyhawks two point lead.
Both of the women’s teams had seven shots on goal, but the Skyhawks took 11 shots total while the Mountaineers only took eight shots overall.
Sunday’s win gave the Skyhawks their first home win of the 2017 campaign. The FLC women now sit at 2-6-1 overall and 2-4-0 in the RMAC.
Going over to the men’s game on friday, where the Skyhawks lost to Adams for only the second time in program history.
The Grizzlies got out to a 2-0 lead after sophomore midfielder Leo Barba scored twice in the second half, both off of deflections.
Skyhawk freshman forward Ryan Lee tried to get a comeback started for FLC when he scored 77th minute, but it was too little too late for the Skyhawks. Adams led FLC in both shots and shots on goal in the contest.
On Sunday, FLC came home to try and right the ship against UCCS.
The men’s soccer game started started off fast with a goal from FLC freshman midfielder Landon Gibson in just the third minute of the game.
FLC took four shots on goal while UCCS had six shots on goal, all of which were blocked by redshirt freshman goalkeeper, Peter Byrne.
Five yellow cards were awarded in the men’s soccer game, which was starting to get pretty chippy. Three went to FLC players and two to UCCS players.
Clayton Smith, a UCCS freshman received the first yellow card of the game, after fouling an opponent in the second half, followed by players Max Fuentes Carrera, FLC freshman midfielder; Aidan Tibbets, UCCS freshman; Nathan Roberts, FLC senior defender; and Jean-Philippe Meibohm, FLC freshman defender, respectively.
Carrera, Tibbets, Roberts and Meibohm received yellow cards within five minutes of each other when play became scrappy.
During this five minute interval players would foul each other and the referee would call it, players from both teams would yell at each other and at the referee and someone would be awarded a yellow card for their behavior. This happened four times until players calmed down some.
After their games this weekend, the men’s soccer team is now 3-3-4 overall and 3-1-2 in RMAC.
Both the men’s and women's next games are away on Oct. 6. The men will play the Metropolitan State University Roadrunners in Denver and the women will play the Black Hill State Yellow Jackets in Spearfish, S.D.
