Outdoor Pursuits, Fort Lewis College's outdoor activities center, is providing travel opportunities for students interested in being active during spring break.
OP has three events scheduled during spring break, Lisa Ivester, intern at OP, said. They are backpacking in Cedar Mesa in Utah, participating in a San Juan River service project and going on a sea kayaking excursion in Panama.
The trip to Panama is completely filled, Brett Davis, coordinator of OP, said.
"We have a waitlist of people who want to get on the trip," Davis said.
There will be ten people going on the trip in total, he said. There are eight spots open to students, and there will be two professional staff members in charge of the trip.
The sea kayaking trip is a five day trip down the pacific coast of Panama, Davis said.
OP is renting the equipment through a company called Fluid Adventures in Panama, he said.
Students will start their kayaking trip in a town called Santa Catalina, Ivester said. They will kayak down the coast and stop off at various islands along the way.
The San Juan River Service Project is a community service project as well as an adventure trip, Ivester said.
"We are floating from Sand Hills to Mexican Hat," she said
They will spend one day removing invasive species from the river banks and picking up trash along the way, she said.
On the San Juan trip, students will also be restoring a campsite that was damaged due to a flash flood, Davis said.
The third option is a backpacking trek through Cedar Mesa in Utah, Ivester said. Students will be backpacking a loop through Cedar Mesa that will take five days, she said.
All equipment will be provided for students going on the trip except for clothing, she said.
All of these trips are great opportunities for students to have fun and adventure during their spring break, Davis said.
"They just have to have a sense of adventure, and enthusiasm for what we're doing," he said.
The deadline to join is Friday, March 13 at 5 p.m., Ivester said.
