The Career Services Center at Fort Lewis College hosted a graduate school workshop on Sep. 11 to help students with questions they may have about graduate school.

Guest speaker Paul Clay, a visiting instructor for the School of Business Administration, program, spoke about his experience with graduate school.

“I try and find different people to speak at the graduate workshops every semester,” said Tana Verzuh, a career services coordinator.

Career Services puts on these programs to gives students different perspectives on graduate school and show what does and does not work for certain people, Verzuh said.

“We try and mix it up so students get a broad view,” she said.

Career Services provides students with resources to helps with resumes, cover letter, job search strategies, finding internships, and just creating a positive online presence, Verzuh said.

“I felt like this was definitely a push for me to get on top of things,” said Mica Rusk, a senior who will be graduating in December. “It was helpful because there were things I didn’t previously know.”

The Graduate Workshop was a great event for students that are even slightly interested in applying for graduate school. Many suggestions and tips were given, making it beneficial to upcoming graduating student.

It is important for students to join clubs or organizations to get a broader idea of interests outside of the classroom, Verzuh said.

Keeping in mind the prerequisites required to apply to graduate schools of particular interests is important as well, and to stand out as an applicant, apply as soon as possible, she said.

Career Services will be hosting “The Graduate Workshop Part II” in the Cascade Room on Oct. 16. The event will begin at 3:30 p.m.
