The local gear consignment store, Durango Outdoor Exchange, is moving from its original location on College Drive to a new location on North Main Avenue, replacing what was once a pizza store.

Durango Outdoor Exchange was started four years ago to give the citizens of Durango a place to buy and sell second-hand outdoor gear for discounted prices. After growing the business they have decided that more space is necessary if they want to continue to grow said Bryce Bagby, Assistant Manager of the store.

“Now we’ve grown to a little over 4,500 consigners, which is really sweet,” says Bagby. “It’s just getting really packed in here and kind of hard to present the goods properly.”

Parking is also one of the biggest issues the Outdoor Exchange faces with their current location. The new location on North Main Avenue provides not only a bigger space for merchandise, but a larger parking lot, upgrading their current parking lot from one space to 13, said Bagby.

The new location the Outdoor Exchange is taking over was once the Pizza Hut that was built in the 1960’s and outdated. Combined with the wet and snowy weather throughout the last couple months, has provided some difficulties for the remodel, pushing their opening date back a week said Bagby.

“Once we bought it we had to get it back up to the city’s code,” says Bagby. “That meant redoing all of the gutters, all of the sidewalks, and the parking lot. That’s a lot of concrete to lay and hope for dry weather.”

Looking into the future the Outdoor Exchange is looking to do more than just sell consignment goods. With the new space they plan to provide the citizens of Durango with accessible wilderness first aid clinics, biking and hiking group meetups, and provide a place where the people of Durango can get together to explore the outdoors, said Bagby.

The Outdoor Exchange plans to close its current location on April 6, and then have its grand opening at its new location, 3677 Main Avenue, on April 12, said Bagby.
