The spring 2018 semester is coming to an end, but finals have to be taken before anyone can enjoy summer break. The Independent asked Fort Lewis College students how they are dealing with stress during finals.
Kelsey Scott: Post-graduate, graduated in 2015 with a Bachelor's degree in environmental biology, Currently pursuing a Geographic Information Systems certificate
Question: Are you stressed for finals?
Scott: I am a little stressed for finals.
Question: How do you cope with stress?
Scott: I cope with stress with my weekly meeting with my friends who I go play trivia with at the Irish Embassy.
Question: How do you avoid unnecessary stressors?
Scott: I try to make sure I’m on top of all of my assignments. Any last minute projects that need to be done, I make sure that I make time for it.
Kristi Tiger: Junior, Biology major
Question: Are you stressed for finals?
Tiger: Yeah.
Question: How do you cope with stress?
Tiger: Not think about it and work out just to work it off.
Question: How do you avoid unnecessary stressors?
Tiger: I don’t really get stressed a lot. I just don’t think about it and try not to stress about it.
Tanner Wilson: Senior, English Major
Question: Are you stressed for finals?
Wilson: No.
Question: How do you cope with stress?
Wilson: Not well. I eat and try to get my work done and I spend money. It’s not great.
Question: How do you avoid unnecessary stressors?
Wilson: I don’t. I should but I guess that would involve identifying what unnecessary stressors are for me and then planning around that to minimize it. I have not done that.
Jesse Villanueba: Senior, Public Health major
Question: Are you stressed for finals?
Villanueba: Not terribly, yet.
Question: How do you cope with stress?
Villanueba: Get outside, relax, unplug for a while.
Question: How do you avoid unnecessary stressors?
Villanueba: Try to not take things so seriously. It isn’t an end all, be all.
Atlee Beam: Freshman, History major
Question: Are you stressed for finals?
Beam: A little.
Question: How do you cope with stress?
Beam: I play video games. A lot.
Question: How do you avoid unnecessary stressors?
Beam: I generally just try to get my work done on time because I find procrastinating is very, very stressful. That’s my secret.
Lydia Hawkins: Freshman, Public Health major
Question: Are your stressed for finals?
Hawkins: Yes.
Question: How do you cope with stress?
Hawkins: I ignore it.
Question: How do you avoid unnecessary stressors?
Hawkins: I generally go to sleep.
Analeisha Rodriguez: Junior, Biology
Question: Are you stressed for finals?
Rodriguez:Yes.
Question: How do you cope with stress?
Rodriguez: I just go to sleep. I don’t want to think about it.
Question: How do you avoid unnecessary stressors?
Rodriguez: Try to start early on my assignments. I try not to stress about it and just try to get it done.
Justin Shorty: Senior, Public Health major
Question: Are your stressed for finals?
Shorty: No, I’m not stressed.
Question: How do you cope with stress?
Shorty: I usually go out with friends or I take walks.
Question: How do you avoid unnecessary stressors?
Shorty: I usually just pull myself out of the situation. If it’s like to deal with a specific topic on an exam, I usually go to the professor and ask about what is going to be on the exam.
Ashley Rodriguez: Junior, Biology major
Question: Are you stressed for finals?
Rodriguez: Yes.
Question: How do you cope with stress?
Rodriguez: Probably not the best way, but procrastination.
Question: How do you avoid unnecessary stressors?
Rodriguez: Start early on assignments.
