Taking the Backcountry Out of the Back Seat

By Aidan Multhauf

At this place there are no chairlifts, lift tickets or crowds. This dream skiing location is called the backcountry.

There is local ski spot that is not Purgatory or Wolf Creek. In fact, at this place there are no chairlifts, lift tickets or crowds. This dream skiing location is called the backcountry.   One person who knows about the backcountry is Steven Meyers, an English professor at Fort Lewis College, and a man with an avid ski history. A major factor for Meyers’ love of skiing the...

Netflix: What To Watch This Month

By Teal Lehto

This holiday season classic is arguably the best Christmas movie of all time.

The Nightmare Before Christmas   This holiday season classic is arguably the best Christmas movie of all time, but definitely the best one on Netflix. Tim Burton’s signature creepy style mitigates the over-the-top holiday spirit usually present in Christmas movies. If you’re at home over break hanging out with your quiet cousin who shops solely at Hot Topic, this movie...

Unfortunately, weather isn’t the only aspect that affects trail closures. Since Durango is a mountain town, we have wildlife, like bears and deer, that live in and around town year round. We also have wildlife, such as elk, that migrate through...

Trail Time: Telegraph Trail

By Teal Lehto

The Telegraph Trail is not necessarily one trail, but a trail system that can be used to explore the mountainous ridges just southeast of campus. This trail system is great because it generally stays pretty dry and easily accessible until there is a significant amount of snow in town. Then it can be used for snowshoeing when there is enough snow!

Trail System: Horse Gulch Uses: Hiking, Mountain Biking, Snowshoeing Distance: 3-4 miles Difficulty: 2 (Meadow Loop), 6 (Telegraph), 7.5 (Pautsky Point), 8.5 (Anasazi Descent)  out of 10 Trailhead: Horse Gulch Trailhead Distance from Campus to Trailhead: 1.1 miles Fun fact: The meadow below Telegraph where Meadow Loop trail goes was previously a garbage dump,...
